Consulting with Clinical Nutritionist Maile Pouls, PhD Print
Many adoptive families have found that their children have a host of both digestive and/or neurological issues that can range from mild to severe. Finding help to address these issues in children can be difficult and frustrating as medical professionals often treat only the symptoms or do not understand how complex these problems can be and dismiss parent concerns. There are many professionals, however, who do understand the complexities of these issues and how to find the root causes, but they may not be as easily accessible to all families. There is one clinical nutritionist that many families have consulted in the healing of their children. Maile Pouls, PhD has dedicated her work to helping families and children through long-distance consulting.

Dr. Pouls has found that digestion is often the underlying root to many of the behavioral symptoms and clinical conditions parents see in their child. A child can be the healthiest of eaters, however if the digestive system is not working properly, then nutrients are not being absorbed and used by the body to function properly. Symptoms can be physical ones including constipation and/or diarrhea, acid reflux, gas and bloating, nausea, etc., but they can also be behavioral or emotional as well. Many parents find that their child’s anxiety, difficulty regulating mood and emotions, inability to properly process sensory input, difficulty sleeping through the night or restfully, etc. are also connected to improper digestion, nutrient absorption and assimilation.

Dr. Pouls examines the diet, how well or poorly the digestive system digests fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, toxicity of the organs, pH, enzyme reserves, chemical imbalances, and nutritional deficiencies using a 24-hour urine analysis. Depending on the child and the history, Dr. Pouls may request additional labs as well.

Through labs, diet, and history, Dr. Pouls is able to work like a detective to find the root causes of the physical, behavioral, or emotional symptoms these children experience…symptoms that can affect the child’s ability to live a happy and healthy life. Using the information from her detective work, Dr. Pouls can develop a diet and nutritional plan that also includes proper supplementation of vitamins, minerals, and support for organs that may be toxic due to difficulties with digestion as well as the use of proper enzymes and probiotics for healing. Dr. Pouls continues to monitor the child though labs to ensure that the specific program she’s developed is working and to make necessary changes until the child has finished the healing phase and has moved on to the maintenance phase.

Many parents have found Dr. Pouls to be helpful in the healing of their children as the stress they endure during adoption can have a significant impact on both the digestive and neurological systems which in turn can have a huge impact on behavior and emotions. This is an extremely important, but often overlooked, piece of a child’s puzzle.
