Violent Language Print
As my son began to be able to speak in sentences, we sometimes heard him say shocking things. "I'm gonna shoot you" is one prime example. We've heard from other families who attribute this kind of talk to the daycare setting. My son was never in daycare, nor did he hear us speak this way. He was also exposed to only minimal, non-violent t.v. (a. 5.5mo, FC)

Another mom reports that her son acted in a similar way but at age 4 he used the words, "I'm going to the kitchen and get a knife and kill you." (a. 7.5mo, FC)

My preschool son has said, "I am going to hurt myself."
"I am going to take my head off."
"I am going to make myself bleed."
"I am going to get hit by a car."

His violent language involves hurting himself, not others. He says these kinds of things when he is in trouble. (a. 6mo, FC)

Our son was never violent with others but he did tell us repeatedly starting right before his third birthday that he was going to run away so he could hurt himself. This is what prompted us to go to [an attachment therapist] because we had no idea what to do and it was getting worse and worse (talk of running away and hurting self)...we started 2 [forms of treatment] at pretty much the same time and all running away and hurting self talk stopped and never returned...
